Windscribe vs. PIA (Private Internet Access): What's the Better Choice?

Rebecca Rosenberg

The main difference between Windscribe and Private Internet Access (PIA) is that Windscribe offers a free plan with up to 15 GB data per month (with access to all the same features as paid users!), while PIA does not offer a free tier.

Instead, PIA offers a 30-day money back guarantee, which means you need to have some form of payment available to even use their service. And if you do sign up, canceling before 30 days will not automatically get you your refund - you need to contact customer support, fill out a form and wait 5-10 business days for the funds to be returned.

And there are plenty of folks that have had issues with PIA refunding them, often requiring multiple tickets and chats with support:

In addition to PIA's lack of a free subscription option, they are also missing several key features when compared to Windscribe:

In this blog post, we will take you through the major points of comparison between both VPNs, including Pricing, Features/Privacy Tools, User Experience, Speed & Reviews. With this info, you should be able to make an informed decision about which VPN is right for you.

But first, keep in mind that PIA was acquired by Kape Technologies in 2019. If you aren’t already aware, Kape has a pretty controversial history of developing adware and browser hijacking tools that are directly at odds with the privacy-focused mission of VPN services.

Kape has also been very active in consolidating the VPN market (including CyberGhost and ZenMate), which actively reduces competition and is likely to lead to lower overall quality of privacy services across the VPN landscape. Meanwhile, Windscribe remains independently-owned and self-funded. Okay, now let’s get into it!

Windscribe vs. PIA: Pricing and Feature Comparison

Let’s get started with a more detailed look at Windscribe and PIA’s pricing models as well as their key features.

Pricing

Windscribe offers a flexible pricing model that sets it apart from many other VPN services. Windscribe has a free plan with up to 10 GB of monthly data if you verify your email, which is generous compared to most free VPNs (plus an extra 5 GB if you post on X). The paid version, called Windscribe Pro, offers unlimited data and access to all server locations. Pricing options include monthly and yearly plans, but the standout feature is Windscribe’s unique "Build a Plan" option, allowing users to select specific server locations and unlimited data for as little as $3 USD per month. This pay-as-you-go model is ideal for users who need just a few server locations without committing to a full subscription.

PIA, on the other hand, follows a more traditional pricing structure. It doesn’t offer a free plan like Windscribe. PIA’s plans include monthly, yearly, and multi-year subscriptions, with longer-term plans offering significant discounts. However, you should be weary of those introductory offers. PIA is one of many VPNs who sell you on a sweet deal when you sign up, but sneak the following into their fine print: PIA reserves the right to change the fees at any time and at its discretion. Any fee changes will apply on any subsequent automatic renewal.

So while you may get a cheaper deal when you first sign up, PIA can up that price any time you are up for renewal. When you sign up for a paid plan with Windscribe, it will ALWAYS renew at the same price, for as long as you are subscribed.

🏆
Verdict: PIA’s pricing may seem straightforward, but they reserve the right to change pricing at renewal and lack the customizable options that Windscribe offers. Windscribe will never change our costs to you while you are subscribed and offers more flexible plan options, as well as generous free plan, making Windscribe the winner here.

Features and Privacy Tools

Both Windscribe and PIA emphasize privacy, but they take different approaches when it comes to tools and features.

Windscribe offers a broad range of privacy tools, many of which go beyond traditional VPN encryption. Key features include R.O.B.E.R.T, a customizable domain and IP blocker that can block ads, trackers, malware and much more. Windscribe also offers Double Hop, allowing users to route their connection through two servers for enhanced privacy. Additionally, Windscribe supports 6 VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, WireGuard, and Stealth, which is useful in regions with heavy censorship. Windscribe’s no-logs policy is transparent, and the service regularly releases transparency reports, which help build trust among privacy-conscious users.

PIA is also well-known for its strong privacy protections. Founded by Andrew Lee*, a vocal advocate for digital privacy, PIA has built its reputation on a strict no-logs policy. However, in 2019, PIA was acquired by Kape Technologies, a company that has faced scrutiny due to its previous involvement with adware distribution. If you care about privacy, this alone should raise flags.

Like Windscribe, PIA offers an ad, tracker and malware blocker; however, Windscribe takes it further by offering additional block/allow categories such as Social Networks, Porn, Gambling and more. Additionally, PIA only offers 3 protocols: WireGuard, OpenVPN and IPSec (for iOS).

🏆
Verdict: While both services offer strong privacy features, Windscribe’s customizable blocking tools and 6 protocol options give it an edge in terms of flexibility. Plus, Windscribe isn't owned by Kape Technologies.

*Lee, while certainly privacy focused, is a very interesting character. Brother of Roger Ver (Bitcoin Jesus), reviver of Kingdom of Joseon (an ancient Korean Dynasty) as Joseon Cybernation (um what?) and sometimes rapper KingLee, PIA Founder Andrew Lee certainly leads an interesting life.

User Experience (UX)

Windscribe is designed with both beginners and advanced users in mind. Its interface is clean and easy to navigate, while still offering more advanced settings for those who want more control. Features like Network Whitelisting and customizable R.O.B.E.R.T settings allow users to fine-tune their experience. Windscribe also has browser extensions that integrate seamlessly with its desktop app, creating a unified user experience across platforms. For users who want a balance between ease of use and advanced options, Windscribe provides an intuitive experience without sacrificing customization.

PIA offers a similarly streamlined user experience, but with a focus on minimalism. The app is lightweight and easy to set up, making it ideal for users who prefer simplicity. PIA’s interface is clean and functional, but some users may find it lacks the depth and customization options that Windscribe offers. That said, PIA is still a solid choice for users who want a straightforward VPN without extra complexity.

🏆
Verdict: Windscribe wins, with a blend of simplicity and advanced customization making it a more versatile option.

Speed

Both Windscribe and PIA offer respectable speeds, but they achieve this in different ways.

Windscribe provides access to servers in over 69 countries and supports modern protocols like WireGuard, which is known for its efficiency and speed. While speeds may vary depending on the server location, Windscribe performs well for streaming, browsing, and gaming.

Windscribe also continually upgrades their server hardware, with over 75 10 Gbps locations to choose from. These locations can handle very high-speed data transfers, providing faster performance, especially for users with fast internet connections (like 1 Gbps or more).

It's great for activities demanding substantial bandwidth, such as streaming, downloading large files, or gaming. Windscribe’s ability to balance performance and security makes it a reliable option for users who need speed without sacrificing privacy.

Private Internet Access has servers in over 80 countries, which helps maintain reliable speeds across the board. PIA also supports WireGuard; however, some users report that speeds can fluctuate, particularly when connecting to more distant servers.

🏆
Verdict: Overall, while both services provide solid speeds, Windscribe’s performance is more consistent, particularly when using advanced features like Double Hop, making it a strong contender for users who prioritize both speed and security.

Reviews

Windscribe receives generally positive reviews for its balance of advanced features and user-friendly design. Users appreciate the flexible pricing options, especially the ability to build custom plans and generous free subscription tier. Windscribe’s privacy tools, such as R.O.B.E.R.T, are praised for offering enhanced security. Some users note that while speeds can vary, Windscribe’s overall reliability and transparency, including its transparency reports, help build trust.

They love us, they really love us!

PIA has long been a favorite among privacy advocates, especially due to its no-logs policy and founder Andrew Lee’s strong stance on digital privacy. However, after PIA’s acquisition by Kape Technologies, some users and reviewers have expressed concerns about the company’s past involvement with adware:

Review of PIA that makes mention of their ownership by Kape Technologies, suggesting it is a risky choice to use PIA if you are serious about your privacy.
Buyer beware!

Despite this, PIA continues to receive generally positive feedback for its affordability, extensive server network, and connection speeds.

🏆
Verdict: Windscribe generally receives better reviews for its advanced features and flexibility, while PIA, though praised for privacy and affordability, faces criticism due to its ownership by Kape Technologies.

Conclusion

Both Windscribe and PIA are strong contenders in the VPN space, but they cater to slightly different audiences. Windscribe stands out for its advanced privacy tools, flexible pricing options, and consistent performance. It’s a great option for users who want a highly customizable VPN experience.

PIA has a simple interface and competitive pricing. However, concerns about its ownership by Kape Technologies should be a consideration for more privacy-focused users. Ultimately, Windscribe’s versatility, robust feature set, and independent-ownership make it the better option for users who prioritize both privacy and control.
